Kraków named a Finalist in the One Planet City Challenge

Kraków has been named a finalist in the international WWF One Planet City Challenge (OPCC), joining a select group of cities recognised for their effective action on climate protection and sustainable development. This prestigious distinction confirms the city's commitment to implementing an ambitious climate policy.

More than half of the world's population now lives in cities, where urban lifestyles are responsible for over 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions. This is driven by the disproportionately high consumption of energy and natural resources.

Fortunately, solutions already exist that make it possible to meet the demands of urban living while remaining within the ecological limits of our planet. To secure a climate-safe future, the most innovative of these solutions must be implemented rapidly and on a large scale in cities around the world.

This is why WWF launched the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) in 2011—to inspire cities by showcasing real local action on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Since then, the initiative has grown to become the world's largest and most influential programme of its kind.

The OPCC supports local governments by providing strategic feedback and expert guidance as they advance their climate action plans. Particular emphasis is placed on initiatives that deliver the greatest environmental impact while contributing to the goals of the Paris Agreement, including limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

To date, more than 1,000 cities across 88 countries have taken part in the challenge, creating a global network committed to accelerating effective climate action and sharing best practices among cities worldwide.
