Kraków becomes City of Year 2021 in Belgian online travel competition

For the second time in a row, Kraków was chosen City of the Year – this time for City of the Year 2021 –  by Belgian Internet users in the Belgian Tourist Award – What's up! 2021 competition. The Belgians could submit their votes from 1st till 30th July.

In the first stage of the competition, editors of travel websites chose 11 destinations in three different categories: Country of the Year, Region of the Year, and City of the Year. In the second stage, votes were submitted by Belgian Internet users. Kraków received 6,630 out of approx. 10,000 votes, leaving Munich, Nantes and Edinburgh behind. Malta and Tyrol also ranked in the forefront.

‘It is a great pleasure and honour to win an award. Kraków is the most famous and most frequently visited Polish city abroad. It has a magnificent and very interesting culture and life, because Kraków is the metropolis of youth. It is also one of the greenest cities – Kraków ranked fifth globally and third in Europe in the Husqvarna Urban Green Space Index (HUGSI),’ stresses Dominika Szulc, Director of the Polish Tourist Organisation in Belgium.

The Belgian Tourist Award is a competition held by GRANDE.be, the biggest travel portal in Flanders, in co-operation with the Belgian travel websites Vacancesweb.be / Vakantieweb.be, the most popular bilingual travel portal in Belgium. The competition is held for Internet users in order to select the best tourist destinations for Belgian travellers. In 2020, the competition was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
