Congresses are back at EXPO Kraków

This summer at the International Exhibition and Convention Centre, EXPO Kraków is going to be busy with congresses. The Central European Congress of Life Sciences EUROBIOTECH returns on 20–22 June after two years of absence. Valued by scientific and business communities, this biotechnology event combines scientific panels and a trade exhibition. For the first time ever, on 4–8 July, Kraków will host  the 21st Triennial Conference of the European Association for Potato Research.

Everything starts with knowledge

Gene therapy, vaccines, skin and muscle biotechnology, medical biotechnology in cancer therapy, application of genome editing for sustainable plant production and innovation are just some of the topics to be discussed during the 8th EUROBIOTECH Congress. The event will bring to Kraków globally-renowned scientists, including Prof. Giulio Cossu (the United Kingdom), Prof. Claudine Kieda (France), Prof. Eran Perlson (Israel), Prof. Markus Ruegg (Switzerland), and Prof. Serena Zacchigna (Italy). There will also be a number of Polish scientists, with lectures to be delivered by, among others, Prof. Alicja Józkowicz, Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć, and Prof. Piotr Trzonkowski. A specially prepared session titled COVID-19: WCZORAJ, DZIŚ I JUTRO (COVID-19: YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW), summing up the two years of the pandemic and outlining the virologic perspective, will definitelycreate a big stir. It will be moderated by Prof. Małgorzata Kossowska and Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć.

EUROBIOTECH is rightly spoken of as a forum that brings science and business together. This year, for the first time ever, the accompanying exhibition will be open to all visitors, not just the congress participants. Exhibitors will include such companies as Animalab, Bio-Rad, Blueprint Genetics, and Selvita. The Congress will offer a new feature this year, the Technology Transfer Zone. A number of centres from across Poland have already announced their presence.

The organisers are also reaching to all those who cannot visit Kraków this time, with two sessions in Polish 'Terapie komórkowe i genetyczne: aspekty naukowe, medyczne, prawne i etyczne' (Cellular and gene therapies: scientific, medical, legal and ethical aspects), and the final session mentioned above, to be streamed live.

The return of world-class congresses is a sign that everything is coming back to normal. The pandemic made us wait two long years for EUROBIOTECH, but today we know that our patience was well worth it, as the coming edition looks very interesting. At EXPO Kraków, we will host outstanding personalities of the world of science who, in turn, will have an opportunity to learn more about the city. The congress is not only a particularly interesting biotechnology meeting for scientists, but also Kraków's flagship event internationally. Over the coming days, we are going to prove that Poland can organise world-class events and that international guests can feel safe here, emphasised Ewa Woch, Vice President of Targi w Krakowie.

They want to know everything about the potato!

In early July, Kraków will host a unique event – a conference of the European Association for Potato Research – which will attract scientists and researchers from around the world who study this seemingly inconspicuous vegetable. The conference has been held every three years at various locations across Europe since 1960. The event will be held for the second time in Poland, and for the first time in Kraków. It is worth stressing here that according to Eurostat data for 2020, Poland is the European Union's second largest potato producer, following only Germany, which accounted for 21.2 per cent of the EU's potato production in 2020. The potato, which we all know very well and which often appears on our menus, is a nourishing food, but it’s also the topic of numerous studies. It has long fascinated the scientific community, as can be demonstrated by the coming conference at EXPO Kraków. During numerous panels, the participants will discuss all important matters related with the potato, from basic and applied research, through cultivation, the testing and applying new technologies, to technical and economic aspect of its production, and finally to storage and processing. It will surely be a memorable event that will be an opportunity for hundreds of experts to get together at the same place and time.

We hope that the Conference will present scientists with new questions and challenges, while enabling industry representatives to learn about the latest scientific achievements. We want our Conference to become a broad platform for exchanging ideas and inspiring new projects and cooperation, said Jadwiga Śliwka, the President of the European Association for Potato Research.
