41st European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS) Meeting - under green investigation

The EPOS congress, held at the ICE Krakow Congress Centre from 29 March to 1 April, was attended by nearly 850 people from 58 countries, including more than 160 speakers.

At the initiative of the PCO of the congress, Symposium Cracoviense, greenhouse gas emissions, volumes of waste, use of products containing volatile organic compounds, the commitment of the delegates to social issues, and other factors will be calculated.

The Krakow-based PCO is a signatory to the Net Zero Carbon Events project and seeks to reduce the carbon footprint of its events by 50% by 2030. It has undertaken the task of assessing and analysing the activities of partners and suppliers involved in the EPOS congress.

Net Zero Carbon Events is an initiative of the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) announced in 2021, with the ultimate goal of uniting the events industry around the world in an effort to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050. One of the goals is to create a framework of coherent standards and actions. The initiative is now supported by nearly 400 entities from around the world.

Carbon footprint - Global Warming Potential (GWP) - is a concept that is gaining in importance, especially as we know more and more about it and its consequences. Calculating the carbon footprint is becoming not just a trend, but a necessity in many fields. In March 2023, the European Parliament voted in favour of reducing EU countries’ greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. The previous target was 30 percent.

The carbon footprint is the sum total of all greenhouse gas emissions emitted by a process, system or population. Greenhouse gases are not just carbon dioxide, although its volumetric contribution to emissions is by far the largest. It is worth noting that there are gases that contribute more to climate warming.
