The Municipal Waste Recycling Facility is a multi-task, phased project covering:

  • a plastic recycling plant
  • a municipal waste recovery plant
  • a bulk waste recovery plant
  • a selective municipal waste collection point for the collection of municipal waste brought by property owners located in Krakow
  • a municipal waste storage hall for waste fed to processing, waste generated, and products obtained in the recycling process
  • the establishment of photovoltaic installations on rooftops, which is part of a wider broad programme to produce electricity from renewable sources and is expected to reduce the operating costs of the plant.

The Municipal Waste Recycling Facility is located on a plot of nearly 7 hectares inside the steel mill complex of ArcelorMittal Poland SA in Krakow.

Phase I of the project will involve the building of:

  • a plastic recycling plant comprising a system for preparation for the recycling of plastic film (recovered in municipal waste sorting processes) by sorting out PE film, and a system for the production of polyethylene pellets by film shredding, washing and pelletising
  • a municipal waste storage hall, back office, administrative and office buildings and gatehouse
  • required accompanying infrastructure covering the access road from Igołomska Street together with internal roads on the area of the Municipal Waste Recycling Facility, vehicle manoeuvre area and parking space
  • external sanitary installations: domestic water, water for firefighting purposes, sanitary and rainwater drainage, electricity, district heating.

The total cost of the project is PLN 245 million. For the purpose of implementing Phase I, MPO Krakow has received funding from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in the amount of:

  • PLN 149,550,000 in the form of a loan
  • PLN 30,000,000 in the form of a subsidy.
